Kelp, also known as brown seaweed, or the kind-of-nasty stuff that gets stuck all over your feet at the beach, does not initially strike me as fascinating. That’s probably why I was surprised to find an entire exhibit dedicated to, of all things, kelp the last time I visited the California Science Center. We visited as a family over Spring Break and I have to say it may have been one of the highlights of the trip (Marveling at the Space Shuttle Endeavour was pretty awesome as well.) Aside from my attempt to kiss The Pout Pout Fish and some cool pictures, I was drawn to the world of exploration behind something that seemed so meaningless, yet unknowingly held such value in my everyday life. Eventually, it led me to thinking about God. The God of kelp. The God who created all things mighty, also created kelp.

“The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.”
Psalm 29:3
Kelp is believed to be in existence 5 to 23 million years ago. It supports a variety of life, has medicinal purposes, can be used in cuisines. I’m definitely not the kelp expert, nor am I equipped to teach you about all the fascinating facts, but the idea that God would pour so much of his wisdom, creativity, care and protection into what can easily be mistaken as scraps, gives me a major boost of confidence. If kelp is special and has a purpose, how can I doubt his love and belief in me? Psalm 139 is not just a nice quote on a journal, it’s a truth to live by.
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
Psalm 139:14
